What can we celebrate today?

Archive for the ‘We clearly need more reasons to eat’ Category

I’m sorry this is so late today, its been a crazy couple of days this week.  My Mother is in the hospital with a Mystery Condition, and it’s put me off my schedule.

But, time marches on regardless of what is happening in our lives, and there are holidays to celebrate today!

Today is:

Brothers and Sisters Day:  If you’ve been lucky enough to have siblings, today is the day to show your love for them.  Doesn’t it just seem like we had National Sibling Day recenty? Well, apparently we all need extra reminders to be grateful for our brothers and sisters.  I have a theory about the Great Cosmic Reason that we are not all born as only children.  I think that sibs are the Universe’s way of making sure we are exposed to people who otherwise we’d never cross paths with. I know that if my brothers hadn’t also been born to my parents, we’d probably never have met. And I’m very glad that is not the case, because they’re pretty awesome in their own ways.  You know, except when they’re beeing stupid doody heads.

mmmmm.... chocolate

National Truffle Day: Now, some maintain that National Truffle Day is a celebration of those rare, pungent fungi that turn up at the base of trees, and  can be sniffed out by specially trained hogs or dogs.  And some think that it’s in honor of the delightful chocolaty confections that come packaged in pretty wrapped boxes.  Really, there’s no real reason you can’t do both!

a truffle, not the chocolate kind

Scurvy Awareness Day; Scurvy might be the only disease that is completely curable through the consumption of alchoholic beverages-  provided that those beverages contain some actual fruit juce. Margharitas, Fuzzy Navels, Lemonade with vodka, whatever you like.  Seriously though, as relatively easy as Scurvy is to prevent and cure, there’s still a surprising number of cases reported each year in the US alone. So, make sure you eat a couple pieces of fruit each week and avoid becoming a scurvy pirate dog, arrrgh.

In addition to being National Honesty Day and Hairstyle Appreciation Day, it is also:

National Raisin Day: This juicy little treasure is actually a dehydrated grape, but who cares? They’re good in pies, cookies, salads, and just on their own (especially covered in chocolate, mmmmm). And because I feel bad that Raisin Day gets shoved off into a post all by itselff today, here’s a picture:

In addition to being National Zipper Day, it’s also:

Shrimp Scampi Day:Did you know that “scampi” actually means “shrimp”?  Yeah, neither did I- until NOW!   And I could have kept that a secret and held my increased knowledge over your head, but I’m not that kind of person.  Well, I’m not today, anyway.

World Wide Pinhole Photography Day: Did you ever make a pinhole camera in school? You know, in art class or maybe science class? NO? (this is my horrified gasp) Then get ye to Google and learn how to make one! Do it now! It’s easy, and it’s fun, and then you can scan and upload your pinhole photograph on the website linked above and share it with the world.

In addition to being National Sense of Smell Day, it is also:

National Kiss Your Mate Day: If you have a mate, and haven’t kissed ’em yet today, make sure you do. If you’re in a long distance relationship, maybe you can send a kiss in the mail, or use a webcam to share a virtual kiss.

National Cubicle Day: I’m just glad it’s Saturday and I don’t have to be in mine!

Great Poetry Reading Day: Poetry is really meant to be read out loud. So, find a great poem and read it to someone. You’ll both be the better for it.

Astronomy Day: Celebrate the vastness of the universe, learn something new about our galaxy.

National Blueberry Pie Day: It’s a little early for blueberries in my neck of the woods. We have to wait for summer before we see any here. Fortunately, other parts of the country are not so limited. I believe I might just pick up some of the lovely round fruit when I stop at the market today, and bake a pie.

In addition to being Tell a Story Day, it is also:

National Arbor Day: While some states will celebrate Arbor Day on a different day, more suited to the best time to plant trees in their climate, today is the nationally recognized day to re-forest. So, get out there and plant a tree!

Morse Code Day: Today marks the birthdate of Samuel Morse, the inventor of the famouse Morse Code.

Babe Ruth Day: One of baseball’s greatest heroes ever, the Sultan of Swat, is honored today.

National Hairball Awareness Day: Most people think that cat ownership is a minimal investment, time wise. And for the most part, they’d be right. No long walks, no intensive behavioral training.   And in most cases, minimal grooming, since most cats prefer to groom themselves. However, cats who don’t get groomed by their pet people are far more prone to hair ingestion, with the nasty side effect of hairballs being harked up.  So get a brush appropriate to your feline friend’s coat, and lend a hand. Your kitty’s tummy (not to mention your rugs) will thank you.

National Prime Rib Day: So tender, so delicious! Prime Rib is one of the most prized cuts of meat available. Check with your local fine dining establishment and see if they have any specials in honor of this Prime Holiday

Besides being Remember Your First Kiss Day, today is also:

Hug an Australian Day: The Aussies have a long hisstory of supporting the US, so today is the day to show your love to them. If you happen to run into someone from The Land Down Under, give ’em a squeeze.

National Richter Scale Day: The Richter Scale is a mathematical equation that assigns a number value to an earthquake, to rate it’s severity. Numbers 1-9 are currently used, but officially there’s no upper limit. It’s good to know that if the worst earthquake possible ever occurs, we’ll be able to assing a number to it, isn’t it?

National Pretzel Day: Mmmm.. those warm, salted, twists of bread, baked to a golden brown. I love soft pretzels, dipped in cheese sauce. So delicious.. My mother, and my kids, love the little crispy pretzels sold in the chips aisle at the local grocery story. Whichever is your favorite, today is the day to o out of your way to enjoy them. It’s almost an obligation.

Hug a Friend Day: We all have a tendency to take our friends for granted, from time to time. It’s kind of part of the deal. But, it’s important to take a moment every now and then to show them they are appreciated. So, give a friend (even if it’s a four leggeed, furry friend) a big hug today.

National Take our Daughteers and Sons to Work Day What betteer way to show our children the opportunities available to them once they join the work force, than to bring them to work with you? Show them around the office, let them play with your highlighters and copy paper.  Honestly, my kids are so much smarter than me, I’d rather they went to work with someone else- like a rocket scientist.

In addition to being  World Penguin Day, it is also:

Administrative Professionals Day:  Is there someone in your office who keeps things running smoothly? Who always makes sure that there’s pads of paper, and pencils, available for meetings? Someone who calls the maintenance people when the sinks don’t drain or the lightbulbs all blow at the same time? Someone who can run reports, make a dozen calls to set up meetings, and find the cost anlysis that you misplaced, all while calmly filing the tax returns? No, it’s not Superman.  Even better, there’s an Administrative Professional in the office.  Take a moment to thank the brilliant person who keeps life in the office moving smoothly, and makes it look easy.

Red Hat Society Day: “When I am old, I shall wear purple…” Honor the elderly women in your life today. They’ve earned the right to cut loose and let their individuality shine.

Zucchini Bread Day: It wouldn’t be a day in April without some kind of food being represented. Today it’s Zuchini bread- if you’ve never tried it, you really should. Sweet and nutty, it’ll surprise you!

National Plumbers Day: I don’t know about you, but the day my toilet backed up into my shower, I was VERY glad that there was a plumber who could get to my house in 15 minutes! I think  that maybe I should bake that guy some cookies…
